World Heath day is celebrated every year on 7th April which is the foundation day of WHO. The day is celebrated to draw attention to the important health issues the world is facing. The day aims to increase the awareness and is often called as global awareness day.

The world Health is celebrated under the sponsorship of WHO, that focuses on the public health of the world at large. The WHO puts local, regional and international events on this day to create awareness of the disease of public health concern

Theme of World Health Day – 2017:Depression: Let’s talk”.

The present theme tries to  mobilize action on depression .Depression is the state of mind affecting people of all age groups ,in all kind of occupation and to every human being. Depression is illness where people are in consistent sadness and loss of interest in doing the daily activities. Depression causes mental anguish and has devastating health impacts.

Symptoms of Depression                         

·         Change in appetite
·         loss of energy

·         Sleeping more or less

·         Anxiety

·         Reduced concentration

·         Indecisiveness

·         Restlessness

·         Feelings of worthlessness

·         Guilt or hopelessness

·         Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

The World health day with the present theme aims to act as tool for recovery from depression. Special attention will be given as to the groups who are significantly affected from depression like adolescents, young adults, women of childbearing age (particularly following childbirth), and older adults (over 60s)

 Objective of the theme

  • The general public is better informed about depression, its causes and possible consequences, including suicide, and what help is or can be available for prevention and treatment;
  • People with depression seek help; and
  • Family, friends and colleagues of people living with depression are able to provide support.
